AI and Psychology Research with Labvanced

ChatGPT and Psychology Research

Text-generation in Labvanced, powered by integrations with OpenAI, allows researchers to create dynamic and highly interactive experimental designs. Instead of relying on static lists of pre-written stimuli, studies can generate unique text scenarios, conversation responses, or narrative variations in real-time based on participant input. Furthermore, this also opens the door to running analysis in real-time and then further specifying experimental flow based on OpenAI's input.

This capability is particularly valuable for linguistics and social psychology research, enabling the creation of realistic chatbots, Turing tests, and adaptive reading tasks that provide a more immersive and personalized participant experience.

Below is a simple example of a simple set-up for ChatGPT research where a participant types in a prompt and automatically gets an answer from ChatGPT on their screen.



OpenAI Text-based Chat

The participant can communicate with ChatGPT in real-time. You can use this template as the basis of the chat and modify it according to your needs.

Note: For this particular demo, the token length (ie. the length of the response) is set to 100 and the temperature (ie. creativity) is set to 1. This can be adjusted under the Study Settings.


Image Generation

AI-powered image generation in Labvanced extends beyond simple stimulus creation to enable participant-led visual synthesis, transforming subjects from passive observers into active creators.

Researchers can design interactive tasks where participants generate their own images via text prompts, allowing for deep investigation into creativity, human-AI interaction, and semantic-to-visual translation.

By capturing both the participant's prompt strategies and the resulting visual output in real-time, the platform facilitates novel experimental paradigms—such as communication games or imagination assessments—where the focus shifts to how individuals conceptualize and construct visual information.

Image Generation Demo

In this demo, the participant types text into an input object which is then sent to OpenAI for image generation. The created images are saved in files and can be accessed by the researcher.

Note: A loading sign is added for effect because image generation always takes time due to its computational needs.


Audio Generation

Transform the auditory dimension of your research with Labvanced’s seamless text-to-speech integration. Powered by OpenAI, this feature allows you to instantly convert written text into high-fidelity, lifelike speech without the need for voice actors or recording equipment. You gain full creative control: choose from a diverse range of vocal personas and specify exact delivery instructions—like a "neutral, calm tone"—to ensure perfect consistency across trials.

Beyond simple narration, you can create deeply interactive experiences by linking participant input directly to the audio engine, allowing your study to "speak" their typed words back to them in real-time. In this demo, the participant is presented with a paragraph about photosynthesis and then a multiple choice question. There are 5 questions in total. The paragraph is read out loud by an AI-generated voice in real-time.

Below are a few examples research that is being conducted with Labvanced utilizing generative AI, as well as an example of a study that focused on human-AI perception.

The Use for AI by Teachers and Lecturers for the Preparation of Learning Materials

For this research project, the goal was to understand how teachers and lecturers use AI to prepare learning and instructional materials. The main premise was the determine the speed, efficiency, and depth of teaching scenarios using AI and what one must be careful or mindful about when leveraging it as a tool.

The Use of AI for Ideation

For this study, researchers wanted to assess how AI can help to create new ideas, such as product names, logos, etc.

This study and the one above are still in the process of being finalized and published (we all know that takes time).

Impact of AI on Decision Making - Pharmaceutical

In this study assessing human-AI perception, researchers presented images of medicine as well as AI-generated confidence probability plots and asked pharmacists to use them as guidance for decision making in a medicine verification task.
