Linguistics and Language-Learning Research with Labvanced

Designing, deploying, and analyzing language learning and linguistics research has never been easier. Labvanced is a comprehensive language research platform that supports both online and in-lab experiments, providing researchers with laboratory-grade timing, multimedia control, eye-tracking, multilingual study support, real-time AI interaction, and more.

As a central hub for linguistics and language-learning research, Labvanced enables scientists to build robust language experiments, run psycholinguistics and cognitive studies, and collect high-quality data across multiple languages and participant settings. By streamlining complex workflows, Labvanced ensures researchers can focus on language research methods rather than technical constraints, making it the ideal linguistics experiment software for modern research.

Common Research Areas Supported by Labvanced

Labvanced serves as a comprehensive linguistics research platform and language experiment builder, offering laboratory-grade tools for online and in-lab language experiments. As a versatile psycholinguistics research platform and bilingual/multilingual research environment, it supports a wide range of experimental linguistics, language learning, speech and text, and language processing research scenarios:

  • Phonetics & Speech Perception: Researchers can conduct phonetics and speech-perception studies such as phoneme identification, categorical perception, prosody understanding, and classic gating or ABX tasks.
  • Psycholinguistics: Labvanced supports psycholinguistic research involving lexical decision tasks, semantic priming, syntactic ambiguity resolution, morphological decomposition, and real-time reading measures.
  • Second-Language Acquisition (SLA): Labvanced enables SLA research covering vocabulary learning, reading proficiency, grammar learning, and bilingual comprehension.
  • Cross-Linguistic Comparisons: Labvanced allows researchers to use multilingual versions of tasks to investigate language families, processing differences, and bilingual effects.

Linguistics and Language Example Research Tasks

See Labvanced in action with our example language experiments and psycholinguistics tasks featured below. Each card is a quick preview you can explore to experience the platform, test features, and get inspiration for your own online or in-lab language research, and also import directly to your account to use and/or edit as needed.

Bouba-Kiki Effect Task

In this experiment, two shapes are presented and a word. The participant must select one of the two shapes as being the best match to the presented word.

Dual Lexical Decision Task

This study investigates word recognition and decision-making in language processing. Participants will view pairs of letter strings and decide whether they are real words or non-words. The task measures accuracy and reaction times in lexical processing.

Editing Text Dynamically

In this demo, the participant is asked to edit paragraph text. There is a live data stream showing their key presses and mouse clicks, as well as the paragraph state, together with timestamps in milliseconds from the frame onset.

Prosodic Awareness Task

In this Prosodic Awareness task, participants will test their recognition of syllable stress in written words and emotion in spoken sentences. Prosodic awareness is a skill that improves with age and language development.

Core Features for Linguistic Research

Labvanced provides a comprehensive language research platform designed for linguistics research software, language learning experiment platforms, and online and in-lab language research tools.

Researchers can create and run language experiments, collect high-quality linguistic data, and support multilingual studies while leveraging hybrid deployment and real-time AI interaction. With these capabilities, Labvanced streamlines complex language research workflows and makes it easy to design robust psycholinguistics and language-learning studies across diverse participant settings.

  • Code-free Interface: Labvanced empowers linguistics researchers by providing a fully code-free platform for building sophisticated language experiments without programming expertise.
  • Millisecond-Level Timing Precision: Critical for lexical decision tasks, priming, syntactic parsing, and any reaction-time-based paradigm.
  • Webcam Eye-Tracking: Implement peer-reviewed webcam eye tracking across language-based tasks and collect gaze-related data.
  • Full Multimedia Control: Reliable audio and video playback, synchronized stimulus presentation, and detailed trial logging. Perfect for phonetics, speech perception, and listening comprehension studies.
  • Randomization & Counterbalancing: Take control of item balancing, block randomization, between-/within-subject conditions with just a few clicks.
  • Build Multilingual Versions of Your Study: Create multiple language versions of tasks, instructions, or stimuli in a single experiment. Participants automatically receive the correct version based on assignment, screening, or language preference.
  • Flexible Logic for Complex Designs: Adaptive learning phases, multi-part tasks, proficiency-dependent branching, or multi-session studies — no coding required.
  • Generative AI Integrations: Participants can speak or chat with an AI agent directly within experimental trials, having AI act as a controlled conversational partner. This enables concise but powerful new paradigms, such as:
    • interactive conversation tasks
    • adaptive language-learning practice
    • contextual or follow-up questioning
    • simple turn-taking or dialogue production measures
