Scoring Procedure for the FS

Each of the 8 items is scored 1 to 7, with a higher item response indicating greater agreement with a positively worded statement about the respondent's life. Item scores are simply summed to produce a single total score ranging from 8 to 56, with no subscales (Diener et al., 2010). There is no subscale structure; the FS produces a single total score.

Normative Score Ranges for the FS

The FS does not have official clinical cutoff scores or diagnostic thresholds the way a symptom-screening instrument like the GAD-7 does, since it measures self-perceived well-being rather than symptoms of a disorder. Instead, a completed score can be compared against population norms to understand roughly where it falls relative to others. The table below reproduces the published percentile norms from a large, nationally representative New Zealand sample (n = 9,646 adults, ages 18-110; Hone et al., 2014):

These are population-referenced percentiles, not a validated clinical severity scheme (Hone et al., 2014). For example, a score of 43 or 44 sits close to the middle of this sample (39th-42nd percentile), close to the sample mean of 43.82.

Interpreting Your Score on the FS

A higher total score indicates greater self-perceived flourishing across the domains the scale covers, such as relationships, purpose, competence, and optimism. Because the FS produces a single total score, there is no separate subscale interpretation to consider.

The FS is a well-being measure, not a clinical or diagnostic instrument. A low score may reflect current life circumstances, a difficult period, or a specific area of dissatisfaction rather than a mental health condition, and should not on its own be used to infer psychological distress or guide treatment decisions. Interpretation should consider the respondent's broader personal and clinical context.

Reliability and Validity of the FS (Extended)

Beyond the primary summary on the instrument page, further findings extend the evidence base for the FS:

  • Large-sample replication: The original validation reliability and validity figures come from a relatively small combined sample of university students. A much larger, nationally representative New Zealand sample (n = 9,646 adults, ages 18-110) replicated the scale's psychometric structure and produced the normative percentile bands used above, adding confidence that the scale's properties generalize beyond the original small-sample study (Hone et al., 2014).
  • Cross-cultural generalizability: The FS has continued to be independently validated outside its original US/English-speaking context. A 2025 study confirmed the scale's unidimensional structure, internal consistency, and measurement invariance across gender and age groups in a sample of Algerian university students, supporting its use in non-Western settings (Mansouri, 2025).

The FS has also been independently translated and validated in numerous other languages and populations.
