Linguistics and Psycholinguistics Studies Using Labvanced

Researchers use Labvanced to study lexical access, phonetic perception, reading, and language acquisition with millisecond-accurate timing, webcam eye tracking, and full multilingual support, from masked-priming lexical decision tasks to gamified phonetic perception games run entirely online. The studies below are a sample of peer-reviewed linguistics and psycholinguistics research built and run on the platform, drawn from the full publications index.

Research Highlights

Masked priming and lexical decision icon
Stages in lexical decision: frequency attenuation in masked repetition priming is insensitive to prime duration

Across two large-scale online experiments (N>2,600), participants clicked through to Labvanced to complete a masked-priming lexical decision task, testing whether word frequency and prime duration interact to shape reaction times.

Webcam eye tracking and multimodal learning icon
Attention and learning in L2 multimodality: A webcam-based eye-tracking study

Forty young English learners of French watched multimodal vocabulary materials while Labvanced's built-in webcam eye tracking recorded their gaze in real time, without any external eye-tracking hardware.

Gamified accent identification icon
Gamification in phonetic perception data collection: accent identification in North East England

Researchers built an interactive map-clicking game in Labvanced, complete with a points system and leaderboard, to test whether gamification could replace traditional per-participant incentives in a phonetic perception study.

Eye tracking during reading icon
Webcams Can Be Used to Study Eye Movements during Reading

After validating webcam eye tracking against an EyeLink system in the lab, researchers built a fully remote version of the reading task in Labvanced to test whether the same webcam-based method holds up when participants use their own devices at home.

Letter-in-string identification icon
Word superiority and sentence superiority effects in post-cued letter-in-string identification

Four experiments testing letter identification accuracy within grammatical versus ungrammatical word sequences were built and presented using Labvanced, isolating a newly identified sentence superiority effect alongside the classic word superiority effect.
